Speechless

Speechless

Are you ever left speechless?

I’ll be honest with you. As someone who gets paid to speak, it doesn’t happen to me very often. In today’s world, being speechless is not cool. We have unlimited ways to say what is on our mind. We can blog our thoughts, tweet them, post them, comment on someone else’s content, or be all old-fashiondy (I don’t think that’s a word, but let’s go with it) and actually talk face to face with someone.

Silence is almost seen as weakness today. I wonder if that’s a good thing. What ever happened to the “strong silent type”?

Trust me though. I get it. There are things that we need to talk about. However, there are some things that we just need to shut up about too. Our world is SO noisy. And, don’t think the irony of this post is lost on me. I am writing a blog post saying we need to shut up more. Awesome!

Last night, God rendered me speechless. My beautiful wife and I were sitting on the couch looking longingly in each other’s eyes, praying, and reading the Bible out loud to each other while we did interpretive dancing (or we were watching TV…I can’t really remember). My wife looked out the window and said, “look at the sky”.

Enter the speechless part. We walked out onto the front porch, and I took the picture at the top of this post with my iPhone. I don’t know that I have ever seen a more remarkable sunset. The pic doesn’t do it justice. I kept listening for God to say “ta-da!” But, I got the distinct impression that He was just quietly enjoying the fact that we were speechless.

Now, to be fair, I immediately Instagrammed this pic (if you are not following me on Instagram, you should). So, I took my speechlessness and used it to contribute to the online noise. Beautiful irony! However, I was not alone, I scrolled Instagram for the rest of the evening marveling at all the pics my friends were uploading of the same sunset. We weren’t the only ones impressed last night.

In a world that seems darker than ever, isn’t it cool that God controls the light? And, aren’t we supposed to share that light? Isn’t the darkness that we talk so much about just the absence of light?

We talk a lot. Our world is noisy. Maybe, just maybe, it needs a little less noise, and a little more light.

When was the last time you were speechless? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
